📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in Long Beach. If the police are called, you may have to pay as much as $20,000 in response costs plus citation fines of $1,000. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 8.6% don’t want fireworks, 81.2% want “safe and sane fireworks,” and 0.4% don’t care one way or the other while another 9.7% want to buy what they choose.)
Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- A car struck a bicyclist in the 1100 block of East Wardlow Road on Wednesday. The collision happened right around 2:30 p.m. The cyclist survived. However, the driver fled the scene. (LB Post)
- With school summer break right around the corner, the Long Beach Unified School District announced its Summer Food Service Program on Tuesday. Beginning June 27 and running to July 29, seven schools offer free lunches to “all children who are one to 18 years old, without eligibility documentation.” The schools are Browning, Cabrillo, Jordan, Lakewood, Poly, Renaissance and Wilson. Lunchtime runs from 10:35 to 10:55 a.m. However, if the child is enrolled in the Child Development Centers, SEAL, School Age Care or WRAP, the youngster is eligible to receive breakfast, lunch and snacks at a larger number of school sites. - Also on Tuesday, the City released a list of safety tips to protect residents from phone and online scam artists. Having begun to copy utility centers’ numbers, the scammers try to get money from residents worried about having their utilities turned off. The city reminds you that “City Utility Services will never initiate a phone call or text requesting immediate payment.” If anyone does need to get a hold of you, “an automated voice message is sent asking for you to call Utility Services, so the matter can be resolved.” Also, the police won’t call anyone to let them know they have a warrant out; similarly, the IRS will not call you to collect taxes. Most importantly, if you do owe money, government officials don’t accept “Bitcoin, other cryptocurrency or gift cards as payment.” (LB Local News)
- If you love Sriracha, it’s time to explore alternatives. We learned on Thursday that a shortage looms. Pointing to “unexpected crop failure from the spring chili harvest,” Huy Fong Inc. warned in April that production problems are on the horizon. “The company said it would not accept any new orders placed before September. Any orders made before Labor Day would be fulfilled in the fall, because it lacks the inventory to meet that demand.” (Press-Telegram)
- Mark your calendars! Sunday is a Makers’ Market at 2nd & PCH. Running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., there will be kids’ activities, live music and more than 35 local artisans selling anything from leather goods to jewelry. There’s going to be food and pets are welcome! (Creative Communal)

Are you a Long Beach resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
