💧 Water Crisis Poll! 💧
Residents are limited to watering their landscapes two days per week, before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. What else should the City do to deal with the water crisis? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 17.3% want to mandate drought-resistant landscaping, 18.2% want to recycle wastewater for irrigation, another 43.6% want to build a desalination plant at the coast, and 20.9% don’t believe residential water use contributes to the water crisis.
Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- There was a murder Saturday morning at 6:29 a.m. The LBPD found a stabbed female victim in the “2900 block of Coolidge Street.” Officers “located a male adult suspect near the Paramount Boulevard exit of the northbound 91 Freeway.” He was taken to jail. (LBPD)
- On Saturday morning, the “Long Beach Health Department announced the first presumptive case of monkeypox infection in Long Beach.” The individual is an adult resident, who had “no recent travel history or known contacts.” Because of limited vaccine supplies, contact tracing is underway and those who had contact will be offered the shot. (Office of the Mayor)
- Did you know that “Long Beach gets about 60% of its annual water supply from local groundwater wells?” We learned Friday that the Water Department would rehab more than 20 groundwater wells, plus add some new ones. At the top of the list are the Stearns Park wells, two of which are “over 100 years old.” However, neighbors aren’t looking forward to “two five-week periods where there will be 24-hour drilling.” (LB Post)
- The Aquarium of the Pacific lost Betty, a ten-year-old sea otter. The animal, which was named after Betty White, died unexpectedly on Thursday. “Betty arrived at the aquarium in 2012 after being found off Del Monte Beach in Northern California.” (NBC)
- Mark your calendars! The Pirate Invasion is making a return! Festivities are planned for July 30 and 31 at the Harry Bridges Memorial Park. Sing sea shanties, watch fire shows after sunset, and enjoy sword fights. In the words of Jack Sparrow, “If you were waiting for the opportune moment, that was it.” (Patch)
