Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. There was a deadly traffic accident Saturday evening at around 10:20 p.m. At Ocean Boulevard and Termino Avenue, a 49-year-old, male 1998 Toyota pick-up truck driver reportedly “failed to yield to an oncoming 2014 Toyota Corolla.” The Corolla driver remained on the scene and police said that “at this time, neither alcohol, drugs nor distracted driving are believed to be factors in this collision.” (LBPD)
  2. On Sunday evening at around 6:57 p.m., the LBPD went to the 3600 Block of East 7th Street on a shots-fired call. Someone was seen shooting and fleeing in a black vehicle. Officers found the car “near the 700 block of Loma Avenue, and subsequently arrested the driver and seized a firearm from inside the vehicle.” Reportedly, the 20-year-old shooting suspect got into a dispute with the victim, and it escalated. (LBPD Blotter)
  3. Did you smell the smoke Sunday afternoon? There was a brush fire reported at the 405 Freeway around 5 p.m. Officials had to stop traffic, and firefighters got to work. By 7:15 p.m., the lanes reopened, and the fire was knocked down. (LB Post)
  4. Outgoing Mayor Robert Garcia, who will go on to Congress, has proposed turning the area "centered around the Broadway Corridor and the neighborhoods north of Alamitos Beach" into a culture district of the LGBTQ community. “Everyone knows it as the heart of the LGBTQ community, but if there’s a way to make sure that history is preserved, that’s what we’re trying to do,” he explained. (LB Post)
  5. Mark your calendars! Head to Alamitos Beach on Saturday at 1 p.m., and you will see the grand opening of the City’s “newest beach attraction, an inflatable aquatic playground known as the ‘Wibit’.” This is a FREE attraction featuring “a springboard, bouncer, monkey bars and other elements to encourage water play, such as swimming, balancing, climbing, jumping, (and) sliding.” Hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and anyone under age 14 needs adult supervision.
