December is the month for holiday treats and goodies. Which is your favorite? So far, 38.5% love See’s Candies, while 13.5% look forward to sugar cookies. Peppermint bark appeals to 7.7%, and eggnog has a loyal following of 34.6%. Poached pears and King Cake are favorites for 1.9% each.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) On Wednesday afternoon, in a traffic accident “on Bellflower Boulevard, south of Atherton Street,” a car and a motorcycle collided. The motorcyclist was an on-duty police officer from the Huntington Beach Police Department. His injuries required him to be hospitalized. The car’s driver stayed at the scene. At this time, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) is still investigating the accident. (LBPD)
2) What was going on Thursday morning in the Bluff Heights area? The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) was serving a search warrant at a Mariquita Street apartment complex, and encountered an individual who refused to comply. Drivers in the area saw “military-style vehicles and weapons” before the LBPD assisted with street closures. If you were near 3rd Street and Colorado or Temple, you were likely caught up in the incident. By 9 a.m., the person was in custody. (Long Beach Post)
3) Remember when we reported on the closure of Gold’s Gym at Pine Avenue and 4th Street? The company was eyeing a larger space at the Pike Outlets. We learned on Tuesday that a temporary Gold’s Gym is now at 5th Street and The Promenade North, where Chuck E. Cheese used to be. In the meantime, construction at the Pike Outlets is ongoing. Reportedly, “an undisclosed tenant approached the Pine Avenue landlord, offering to pay a higher rent for the 35,000-square-foot space,” which meant that the gym had to move before its new location was finished. (Long Beach Business Journal)
4) More than 200 doulas work with the Birthworkers of Color Collective. The Long Beach group is now looking to find a brick-and-mortar location and is asking the public for help. “The collective currently rents out various spaces to train doulas, see clients, and host community events. It has set a fundraising goal of $100,000 to pay for rent, upkeep, and other fees related to opening a storefront.” As of Wednesday, the Birthworkers of Color Collective has collected $765. (Signal Hill Tribune)
5) This Saturday is the Daisy Lane Parade! It starts at 5 p.m. and begins on Daisy Avenue at West Burnett Street. From there, it will “travel south down the east side of Daisy Avenue to Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), where it will make its way around the median and back up the west side of Daisy Avenue, ending at West Hill Street.” Drivers should plan to stay off Daisy Avenue between Willow Street and PCH.
