📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in Long Beach. If the police are called, you may have to pay as much as $20,000 in response costs plus citation fines of $1,000. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 7.7% don’t want fireworks, 82% want “safe and sane fireworks,” and 0.5% don’t care one way or the other while another 9.9% want to buy what they choose.)
Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- Tuesday evening, just before midnight, the LBPD headed to the 1700 block of Rose Avenue. There was a report of a firearm discharge. A man claimed that there was a hole in his window because someone shot into his home. However, “officers were unable to locate any evidence.” (LBPD)
- Votes from Tuesday’s Primary Election are still being counted. However, as of right now, it looks like soon-to-be former Mayor Robert Garcia is dominating the run for the 42nd District but will face a runoff. Councilmembers Rex Richardson and Suzie Price will face each other in a November runoff for the mayoral role. District 1 (CD1) may go to incumbent Mary Zendejas outright; the same goes for CD7’s incumbent Roberto Uranga. CD3 will head to a runoff between Kristina Duggan and a yet-to-be determined second. CD5 may be a runoff between Megan Kerr and Ian Patton; CD9 is also a runoff between Jonie Ricks-Oddie and Ginny Gonzales. (Long Beach Post)
- Update: We recently alerted you to the well-publicized DUI checkpoint put on by the LBPD East Division on Saturday. Today, the numbers are in. Set up “on Lakewood Boulevard — between Wardlow Road and Spring Street — from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.,” the PD saw about 1,900 vehicles. Of these, 343 were screened. Seven drove without a valid license. Another three had various vehicle problems. There were no arrests. (LB Post)
- It was Signing Day at Long Beach Poly, and we learned on Wednesday that a record-setting 42 Jackrabbits signed their names on the dotted lines that would guarantee them college scholarships. Special recognition was also given to “water polo’s Beau Wade and wrestling’s Eliana Eats . . . both of whom had 4.0 unweighted GPAs.” Congratulations! (The562)
- Mark your calendars! The grand reopening ceremony for the Recreation Park Playground is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Get a first look at the dinosaur-themed playground at 4900 East 7th Street. Bring the kids! (LB Public Works)
