💧 Water Crisis Poll! 💧
Residents are limited to watering their landscapes two days per week, before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. What else should the City do to deal with the water crisis? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 17.9% want to mandate drought-resistant landscaping, 20% want to recycle wastewater for irrigation, another 42.1% want to build a desalination plant at the coast, and 20% don’t believe residential water use contributes to the water crisis.

Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Hoops After Dark is coming to the Salvation Army courts at Long Beach Boulevard and Spring Street on August 1. It is the latest incarnation of the City’s Midnight Basketball leagues that came into existence in 1994. Sixty players “between the ages of 17 and 25, sometimes from rival gangs” compete and receive access to “job training seminars, guest speakers and networking.” (LB Post)
  2. The Rite Aid store at 5670 East 2nd Street is no more. The store closed on Monday for good, making it one of the “about 146 locations (that) have closed over the past nine months after Rite Aid decided the stores weren’t profitable.” The store was at its location for 30 years. (Press-Telegram)
  3. The City Council voted on Tuesday to approve “a $7.4 million contract with Sacramento-based Royal Electric Company to upgrade Long Beach Airport’s primary air carrier runway.” The electrical equipment needs replacing, and “existing light fixtures will be replaced with LED fixtures.” (LBC Meeting Notes)
  4. The LBPD had a busy Tuesday. There were a couple of shootings to investigate. The first was a no-hit shooting at “the 900 block of Maine Avenue” at a little after 8 p.m. Officers believe that “two groups of unknown suspects in the area exchanged gunfire and fled the scene prior to officers' arrival.” The second shooting took place around 9:38 p.m. and involved two parties in a verbal dispute in a residence on “the 2300 block of East 15th Street.” (LBPD)
  5. Mark your calendars! The PD’s Fraud Detail and Senior Police Partners are working with elderly residents to protect themselves from scams and frauds. There will be several presentations that highlight the current scams making the rounds. The next ones are July 27 at Cesar E. Chavez Park and July 28 at Houghton Park. Both begin at 11 a.m. (Long Beach PD)
