Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- Who was in the panga boat that came ashore at 8th Place and Ocean Boulevard on Alamitos Beach? It happened Sunday morning at 12:25 a.m. According to a witness, 15 people fled. Officials connected the boat sighting “with signs of a successful human smuggling event from Mexico.” There have been multiple panga boat sightings over the last few weeks in Laguna Beach and Newport Beach. (LB Post)
- There was an attempted robbery on Tuesday on the 4100 block of Viking Way. The LBPD received calls around 3:19 p.m. that there were shots fired. When arriving, officers learned that an armed guard at an ATM shot his gun. “An unknown number of male suspects approached as he was servicing the ATM and attempted to rob him.” The suspects fled. (LBPD)
- On February 2, a 31-year-old Signal Hill man was shot near Atlantic Avenue and Esther Street. On March 9, the PD identified a 20-year-old Anaheim man as a suspect. On Wednesday, officers arrested a second suspect, a 19-year-old Long Beach resident. He was booked on “one count of murder.” (City of LB)
- Did you lose power on Wednesday? You weren’t alone. The outage affected “the area between 15th Street/southbound and PCH/northbound and Redondo/eastbound and Obispo/westbound.” At the time, officials estimated it would take about 10 hours to restore power. (LB Public Works)
- Mark your calendars! The Naples Islands pancake breakfast is back! Scheduled for Saturday, the 73-year-old tradition features “a breakfast of pancakes, sausage and orange juice,” a fun run, craft fair, plant sale and more. Head to Colonnade Park at 7 a.m.! (Press-Telegram)

Are you a Long Beach resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
