I-605 Freeway Lane Closures May Cause Traffic Headaches This Weekend

The closures are due to the multi-million-dollar Super 605 freeway corridor project, according to Caltrans officials.

WHITTIER, CA — Caltrans crews will close down lanes on the southbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway starting through the weekend as part of a multi-million dollar corridor project by Caltrans.

The closures, which will focus on paving work, are expected to start on Friday and will continue through Monday, Caltrans officials said in a statement on Monday. They'll take place from Whittier to Washington boulevards.

  • Southbound I-605 reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. Friday to 4:01 a.m. Saturday.
  • Southbound I-605 reduced to two lanes from 4:01 a.m. Saturday to 11 p.m. Sunday.
  • Southbound I-605 reduced to one lane from 11 p.m. Sunday to 5:01 a.m. Monday.
  • All southbound I-605 lanes will reopen to the public by 5:01 a.m. Monday.
  • The eastbound Washington Boulevard on-ramp to southbound I-605 will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.
  • The westbound Washington Boulevard on-ramp to southbound I-605 will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
  • The southbound I-605 Washington Boulevard (East)/Saragosa Street off-ramp will be remain open 24/7.
  • The southbound I-605 Washington Boulevard (West) off-ramp will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.
  • The southbound I-605 Slauson Avenue off-ramp will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
  • The southbound I-605 Washington Boulevard (West)/Slauson Avenue off-ramp will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
  • The eastbound Slauson Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-605 will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.

Detours will be put in place, although Caltrans is asking that drivers avoid construction areas and take other freeways instead. Similar closures may take place every two weeks through the rest of 2025, except on holiday weekends, according to Caltrans.

The closures are part of the "Super 605" freeway corridor projects that are meant to fix the roadways along the 605 freeway from Long Beach to the San Gabriel Valley, according to Caltrans.

The $260 million project began in 2023 and is expected to be completed by early 2028, according to Caltrans. Some of the fixes will include improved payment, replacing signage, striping and warning light systems, according to Caltrans.

The new pavement is expected to extend the service life of the roadway up to 40 years, while other upgrades are being added to improve ride quality and safety, according to Caltrans.
