Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

1) We learned on Tuesday that the intersection at 23rd Street and Lakewood Boulevard is slated to get a safety makeover. You may remember that it was here that a 57-year-old driver failed to yield and struck a seven-year-old boy on July 26. The child died. Improvements include “trimming the bushes and branches on the north side of the intersection, installing yellow continental crosswalks with horizontal stripes on all crossings, new centerline striping along the east and westbound approaches and signage warning north and southbound drivers of the presence of a school zone nearby.” (Long Beach Post)

2) Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, who just survived a second recall effort, announced on Tuesday that he “filed charges against a woman alleged to have made racially charged threats against her neighbors.” (We discussed her on Saturday in connection with the goings-on at the apartment building in the 2300 block of East 2nd Street.) The charges are “six felony counts of criminal threats and one felony count of violation of civil rights.” (LA County DA, Patch)

3) Remember the King’s Hawaiian "Pretzel Slider Buns, Pretzel Hamburger Buns and Pretzel Bites" recall we discussed? It is now being expanded to include other companies that used the same vendor as King’s Hawaiian. As of Tuesday, the list includes “Stumptown, Glucerna, Premier Protein, and Aloha” as well as “Cafe Grumpy Ready to Drink Cold Brew Coffee, some products of Organic Valley 1% lowfat milk, some Kate Farms nutrition shakes, some cartons of PediaSure Harvest, and some cartons of Ensure Harvest.” If you have questions, the vendor has opened up a support center at 1-800-627-0557. (Patch, Patch)

4) It’s official! Pumpkin spice is coming to Dunkin’ Donuts! While the city is facing Flex alerts because of the broiling heat, Dunkin’ encourages cool fall thoughts by beginning their promotion on Wednesday, “bringing back Dunkin’s Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, Pumpkin Spice Signature Latte, the pumpkin bakery line-up and Maple Sugar Bacon.” If you get in on the deal before September 13, “a medium Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew or Pumpkin Spice Signature Latte can be purchased for $3.” Your closest locations might be on 3861 North Lakewood Blvd or 5560 East 7th St. (KTLA)

5) Mark your calendars! The Long Beach Buddhist Church at 2360 Santa Fe Avenue is hosting its Bon Odori event on August 27. Running from 3 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., there will be food and prizes in addition to the dance! (Rafu)
