📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- For 13 years, councilmembers have seen efforts to transform the Terminal Island Freeway between 20th and Willow streets into a park space. And for 13 years, efforts failed. Now pushed by Councilmember Roberto Uranga, the goal is to turn one mile into a green space with a local road. City management has 120 days to put together a feasibility report. Funding could come from the 2028 Olympics. Proponents love the idea of having a green space with recreation opportunities. Opponents, mostly trucking companies and labor unions, say that the project would “force truck traffic onto alternate routes and affect the efficiency of moving goods in and out of the port.” (Long Beach Post)
- What are folks discussing at California State University Long Beach (CSULB)? A topic introduced last week involved the creation of women-only parking areas. It’s not an outcropping of wokeness; in other countries, these parking spaces are already available. Women-only parking zones have larger spaces, are situated closer to entrances, and have monitored security feeds. Proponents of this idea cite security worries. Interestingly, opponents cite the same issue; “people with bad intentions will know where to wait for us,” a student opined. (Daily 49er)
- Kitchen Lingo Books at 2116 4th Street held its soft opening on March 11. It’s a “shop for people who love to eat, love to cook, and love to talk about what they cook and eat.” This latest addition to Retro Row only takes up 400 square feet, but it has huge plans. In addition to carrying current, vintage and collectible cookbooks, look for panel discussions and seminars. (Kitchen Lingo Books, LA Eater)
- Another incoming business is Cena Vegan. As of Monday, it’s serving street food-style fare out of 456 Elm Avenue, which is the Partake Collective Food Hall. The official grand opening took place Tuesday. This eatery is already a hit in Los Angeles, where its tortas and tostadas have hungry guests lining up for more. Try it, you know you’re curious; what does a vegan champurrado taste like? (Cena Vegan)
- Are you an artist with an interest in “Pop-Surrealism?” The Long Beach Creative Group/Rod Briggs Gallery at 2221 East Broadway wants to hear from you! You have until March 22 to submit your artwork for an exhibition. To qualify as an entrant, you must be an artist in the OC or L.A. County; or, you need to be an artist who attends or graduated from Cal State Long Beach or Long Beach City College. Finally, “the art, which must be no larger than 48 inches in any direction, including frame, must be original works created in the last five years that illustrate pop-surrealist style.” (The HiLo)
