📰 Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
1) A shoutout to Dr. Vanessa Gavin-Headen! Practicing medicine at 3900 East PCH, we learned on Thursday that she was honored by Kaiser Permanente with one of two “2022 Family Physician of the Year” awards. “Gavin-Headen has been with Kaiser Permanente at the Long Beach Medical Office for the past 24 years. Her commitment to service always extended beyond the walls of her medical practice.” Congratulations! (L.A. Sentinel)
2) There were a couple of reported crimes in the last couple of days. On Wednesday, the LBPD responded to the report of a “deceased male adult inside” a car at Ocean Boulevard and Corona Avenue. On Thursday, just after midnight, there was a shooting in the 6300 block of Myrtle Avenue, which left an adult male wounded. (LBPD)
3) The Luxury Inn at 5950 Long Beach Boulevard is described as “one of the largest nuisance motels.” On Tuesday, the City Council voted to buy the property for $16.6 million, renovate it, and turn the 78-room site into a temporary housing facility. “The city currently expects renovations to last until July, with the site being ready for occupancy by October 2023.” Proponents support the decision that expands the city’s “capacity to house people experiencing chronic homelessness.” Critics ask why “North Long Beach was absorbing so many of the city’s facilities that are intended to house the homeless.” (Long Beach Post)
4) If you take the C Line, aka the Green Line, listen up! “Beginning Friday, September 16 after 9 p.m. through Sunday, September 18 close of service, the last stop for all eastbound trains will be Long Beach Blvd Station.” There will be free Metro Green Line Shuttles if you need to continue to Lakewood or Norwalk. Metro will be upgrading the signaling system, which calls for the “full track closure and bus shuttles between Long Beach Boulevard and Norwalk Station.” (Metro)
5) Mark your calendars! The Daybreak Food & Music Festival runs this Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 555 Pico Avenue, in the Berth 55 parking lot. “Enjoy the scenic view of Long Beach Harbor and wide selection of food, merchandise, clothing, arts & crafts vendors and live DJs.” It’s free, but you need to register.
