Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. The LBPD began an investigation into a deadly shooting in “the area of the Los Angeles River and Pacific Coast Highway.” Officers were called Tuesday at around 8:26 p.m. They found a male victim. “There is no suspect information nor motive at this time.” (LBPD)
  2. As of Tuesday, there are five “probable and confirmed” monkeypox cases in Long Beach. Due to the limited availability of the JYNNEOS vaccine, the local health department limits doses to specific risk groups. They include those with confirmed exposure as well as those in the vicinity of a confirmed exposure. Others groups are “gay or bisexual men and transgender persons who are on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), . . . attended or worked in saunas, bathhouses, sex clubs, circuit parties or sex parties where they had anonymous sex or sex with multiple partners, . . . or with a diagnosis of gonorrhea or early syphilis within the past 12 months.” If you meet these criteria, please fill out a pre-registration survey and join a waitlist. (City of LB)
  3. The LB City Council voted Tuesday to look “at options to entice landlords to accept the hundreds of homeless people in the city who have housing vouchers that could pay for a significant portion of their rent.” Currently, there are about 400 Section 8 recipients who have a difficult time finding a landlord to take the vouchers. Councilmember Stacy Mungo Flanigan suggested “incentives ranging from refunded development permit fees and subsidies from other city departments.” Concurrently, the City appears to be negotiating with “nine hotel properties” to buy the venues “to use as a homeless shelter.” (LB Post)
  4. COVID-19 strikes again. On Tuesday, “the rise in cases fueled by two new omicron subvariants” led to cancellation of the New Blues Festival. The event was scheduled for Labor Day weekend, and is now postponed to Labor Day 2023. “Tickets for this year’s festival will be honored next year.” (Press-Telegram)
  5. Mark your calendars! On Friday, from 7:30 p.m. until about 11 p.m., the Aquarium of the Pacific hosts a Night Dive after-hours party. There will be “DJs, art installations, drag queen bingo and places to purchase cocktails.” This event is for those age 18 and older. (NBC)
