📰 Here are the top three stories today in Long Beach:
1) On Friday morning, the LBPD booked a 38-year-old Anaheim man “for attempt murder and (he) is being held on $1,000,000 bail.” He’s a suspect in the September 11 “no hit shooting in the 2500 block of Lakewood Boulevard.” A dispute led to “the suspect firing an assault rifle towards the” people he was arguing with. A search took “numerous assault weapons, rifles, handguns, ammunition and gun parts” off the streets. (LBPD)
2) On Friday evening, there was a traffic collision at “the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 19th Street.” A motorcycle rider was going “southbound on Atlantic Avenue approaching 19th Street, when a 2014 Toyota Tundra, driven by a 59-year-old male resident of Long Beach, pulled out in front of him.” The motorcycle could not stop in time to prevent the collision. Its rider “was pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries.” (PD Press Release)
3) The latest Blue Ribbon School in the Long Beach Unified School District is Newcomb Academy at 3351 Val Verde Avenue. The Department of Education made this announcement on Friday. The Blue Ribbon signifies “a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.” “At Newcomb, we feel that we make a tremendous, positive difference for so many students, and it’s rewarding to see that feeling validated at the national level,” the principal said. (Press-Telegram)
4) If you thought the coyote situation was bad before, listen up! We learned on Friday that now is the time that “young coyotes are beginning to leave their dens and explore.” Animal Care doesn’t respond to “reports of coyote sightings unless it involves an attack on children, adults or pets.” However, “Animal Control Services wants people to report coyote sightings after the fact in order to keep track of the activity.” (Press-Telegram)
5) Mark your calendars! The city is extending its “amnesty for first-time pet licenses and late-penalty fees” until Dec. 31. Put together by Council Members Al Austin, Suzie Price and Stacy Mungo Flanigan, affected residents have to apply for the waiver by mail, phone or in person. No, you cannot do it online. “Austin believes the amnesty program will lead to awareness of pet health and the reasons for licensing and also encourage a bond with LBACS.” (Long Beach Post)
