Major Flooding Shuts Down Long Beach Freeway

LONG BEACH, CA — All southbound lanes on the Long Beach Freeway were closed Thursday morning due to dramatic flooding conditions, according to Caltrans.

ABC7 reported that cars and trucks on the freeway were attempting to traverse through a couple of feet of standing water on Interstate 710 near Pacific Coast Highway.

The freeway was shut down just before 10 a.m. and maintenance crews were on their way to the area.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, the 710 was also impacted by flooding at Del Amo Boulevard.

A flash flood warning was issued in Long Beach as rainfall rates hit between 1 and 1.5 inches per hour, which raised risks of flash flooding.

According to the National Weather Service, roadway flooding has already been reported and people were advised to avoid travel.

"Turn around, don t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles," the National Weather Service said.
