Long Beach Hosts Earthquake Preparedness Workshop

From The City of Long Beach: The City of Long Beach in conjunction with Long Beach City College (LBCC) is hosting a free QuakeSmart Preparedness Workshop on May 16, from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM, at the LBCC campus, 4901 E. Carson Street, to increase resiliency for businesses and community organizations in the event of a major earthquake.

“We need everyone to be prepared for a major earthquake; so I am happy that we are able to offer this QuakeSmart Workshop to ensure that, as a City, we are as ready for a natural disaster as we can be,” said Mayor Robert Garcia.

At the workshop, the City’s Disaster Preparedness Department, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and United States Geological Survey (USGS) emergency response staff will share information on how businesses and community organizations can mitigate the impacts of an earthquake and become more resilient organizations.

“This workshop is one of many disaster preparedness trainings we offer to prepare our community for a disaster,” said Reginald Harrison, Director of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications. “I encourage businesses and community organizations to take advantage of this opportunity and register today.”

The program also includes safety expos, where attendees can meet Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members and discuss emergency preparedness plans with vendors.

All businesses and residents are advised to be prepared and self-sufficient for up to five days following a disaster by creating an emergency supply kit filled with items that are used on a daily basis.

Businesses and residents are also encouraged to join the CERT, or take classes at the Red Cross to learn basic emergency medical procedures.
