Long Beach Little League Team Headed To Youth Baseball World Series

Long Beach's Heartwell PONY team will play its first game in the World Series on Friday against the team from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

LONG BEACH, CA —¸ Long Beach's little league Protect Our Nation's Youth (PONY) team won the program's West Zone tournament and will play in the PONY League World Series.

The West Zone tournament was hosted in West Covina where eight teams from California, Washington and Hawaii competed. In five games, the Heartwell team outscored its opponents 44-22 and only lost one game.

“We have a small league of only six teams that has produced teams that have been to the World Series now six times, winning in 2003,” Heartwell coach Matt Paige said. “Our program has produced 24 MLB players, including the current players of Travis d'Arnaud, Justin Turner, Jonathan Singleton, Matt Duffy, and JP Crawford.”

The Heartwell Long Beach was previously known as Lakewood in the World Series and made appearances at the 1966, 1972, 1990 and 2003 games. In 2003, Lakewood won the World Series title.

The Long Beach team played its first game against Guanynabo, Puerto Rico on Friday at 7:30 in Washington, Pennsylvania.
