UPDATE: Suspect, Police Dog Die in Officer-Involved Shooting

Police were investigating a suspect wanted in an assault with a deadly weapon case.

Long Beach, CA — A situation involving a barricaded suspect ended with the suspect and a police dog being shot Tuesday, police said.

The situation started at around 9 a.m. when the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force spotted the suspect wanted in connection with a December 2014 shooting that wounded several victims, the Long Beach Police Department said.

Members of the task force attempted to arrest the suspect around 16th Street and Temple Avenue, but the suspect ran and a foot pursuit followed, police said.

The suspect then fled into an acquaintance's apartment in the 2800 block of East 15th Street and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force requested the department's help, police said.

The suspect was deemed armed and dangerous, that was when the Long Beach SWAT team was activated. Residents in the area was evacuated as a precaution, police said.

SWAT officers then coaxed the suspect out of the apartment, but he wasn't cooporating with officers commands and charged at police, according to a preliminary report.

"As the suspect began to aggressively charge the officers, intermediate force options were deployed, including a 40mm rubber baton round and a Police Service dog attached to SWAT," police said in a release.

The suspect was still charging at police with a knife while the canine unit was trying to subdue him, that was when one officer opened fire, striking both the suspect and the police dog, according to a news release.

Long Beach Fire Department transported the suspect to a local hospital where he was later died, police said.

The name of the suspect has not been released.

Credo, the police K-9 dog, was transported to a veterinary hospital where it died.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Police closed Temple Avenue, from 14th to 16th streets, and Orizaba Avenue, from 14th to 16th streets, for a time during the investigation.

Because of the street closures, parents were asked to pick up their children from nearby Lee Elementary School at their regular dismissal times at Orizaba Avenue and 17th Street.
