Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- On Monday, at around 7:03 p.m., the LBPD received reports of three teens being threatened by a man with a gun. They arrived at “the area of Wardlow Road and the San Gabriel River,” but found that the individual had fled. Officers did find “a pump action replica air rifle at the scene.” (LBPD)
- If you were headed to Sunset Beach on Monday, there’s a good chance it was closed. A person on the beach spotted a shark and officials closed the beach. “Based on those sizes, it may not be a juvenile shark,” an official explained. “If a shark does try to bite you, however, you can defend yourself by hitting the shark in its sensitive areas, including the gills, eyes and snout. This can often discourage a shark and get it to release if biting.” (Long Beach Post, CSULB)
- Earlier, we talked about the trucker work stoppage that slowed down traffic for an entire day around the ports. At that time, we mentioned that AB5, a law signed back in 2019, was at the heart of the issue. On Sunday, we learned that the implementation of AB5 is “sparking fears of disastrous ripple effects across a global supply chain already at its breaking point amid pandemic backlogs, ongoing labor disputes, and inflation at a 40-year-high.” Some 70,000 independent truckers are affected. (LB Post)
- The Belmont Shore Car Show is coming back “on the second Sunday in September this year.” However, we learned on Tuesday that the organizers need some help. "We need more vendors. We need more sponsors. Everything has pretty much doubled in cost," the Belmont Shore Business Association explained. If you can help out, there are various levels of sponsorships. (Press-Telegram)
- Mark your calendars! Movies in the park are going on! Today you can watch “Clifford The Big Red Dog” at College Estates. If you miss it, head to Wardlow on Friday. On Thursday, The “Mitchells Vs The Machines” will play at Drake. (City of LB)
