High interest rates, construction costs, and a sluggish economy are dampening new projects, even as the city pushes to meet aggressive state housing targets and expand affordable options across North, East, and central Long Beach neighborhoods.

2. Expo Arts Center hosting senior programs for cultural enrichment and health (sigtrib.com) — Long Beach seniors 50 and older now have free, in-person programs back at the Expo Arts Center and five other city sites, offering everything from fitness and arts to social services. With renovations complete at Expo, older adults can enjoy lunches, classes, games and wellness activities on weekdays across neighborhood centers throughout the city.

3. Parents of notorious Border Patrol agent blame public backlash for his overdose death (lbpost.com) — Long Beach readers are learning more about the fallout from a controversial Border Patrol agent’s conduct at a shoreline restaurant and his now-dismissed local criminal case. His parents say intense public backlash, protests around his Long Beach posting, and media coverage contributed to the stress that preceded his fatal overdose in Riverside County. They shared their perspective after a Long Beach judge closed the case.

4. Carnival cruise ship gets stuck in port due to tech outage (sanluisobispo.com) — Cruise passengers sailing from Long Beach faced an unexpected overnight delay when the Carnival Firenze was stuck in port due to a shipwide network outage that crippled onboard systems. Staff had to switch to handwritten tickets while the itinerary was adjusted. The report also touches on new Carnival cruise packages, MSC’s future megaships, and recent cruise stock gains.

5. Dad And Stepmom Plead Not Guilty In 14-Month-Old Girl's Torture Death In Long Beach (patch.com) — Long Beach authorities have charged a local father and stepmother with murder, torture, and child assault in the death of a 14‑month‑old girl, and both have pleaded not guilty. Police say the toddler died in November after ongoing abuse, and the pair, arrested by Long Beach officers, are being held without bail pending a February court date.
