📰 News we're reading

1. Man And Woman Killed In Hit-And-Run In Long Beach Identified (patch.com) — Long Beach residents are learning more about the two young passengers killed in Sunday night’s hit-and-run crash at Sixth Street and Atlantic Avenue, now identified as Bobbi Smith and Gilberto Lopez. Police say a speeding BMW ran a red light, struck two other cars, and the driver fled, leaving Long Beach officers asking witnesses to come forward as they continue investigating.

2. 15-Year-Old Robs Man, Fires Gun In Long Beach: Police Say (patch.com) — Neighbors near Broadway and Tribune Court in Long Beach may have seen a heavy police response early Saturday after officers say a 15-year-old robbed a man at gunpoint and fired a shot during a struggle. Long Beach police quickly tracked down and arrested the teen nearby, and detectives are continuing to investigate what led up to the armed confrontation.

3. As it tries to close a large budget gap, LBUSD urges students to attend class (lbpost.com) — Long Beach Unified is urging students to attend school more regularly as low attendance and declining enrollment fuel a $70 million budget deficit. District leaders say every percentage point drop in attendance costs millions in state funding, and they’re rolling out incentives and advocacy efforts that could affect class sizes, staffing, and resources across Long Beach schools.

4. World Famous VIP Records sign will have new home at city park to be named in its honor (lbpost.com) — Long Beach has approved funding to restore the iconic VIP Records sign and install it in a new city park at Anaheim Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. The park is expected to be named in the sign’s honor, cementing VIP’s role in the city’s hip-hop history and giving residents and visitors a new public space to celebrate local culture.

5. Drivers in California to see changes to speeding and red light cameras (kesq.com) — Long Beach is one of just six California cities authorized to roll out new speed cameras in school zones and street racing hotspots under Assembly Bill 645. Additional statewide laws will also bring automated speed enforcement to highway work zones and update red light camera rules, meaning local drivers could soon see more cameras and stricter enforcement on familiar routes.
