📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) An adult male pedestrian was hit and killed near PCH and Orange Avenue on Monday. The accident happened at 9:30 p.m. when a 35-year-old driver in a 2017 Chevy Silverado struck the man “who was crossing Pacific Coast Highway against a red light.” The driver remained on the scene, and the police say that “speed, distracted driving, (or) impairment are not believed to be a factor in this collision.” (Signal Hill Tribune)
2) On Tuesday evening just before 7 p.m., the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) responded to an assault in the 1800 block of Locust Avenue. A man had stabbed another (non-fatal). The suspect barricaded himself inside, and SWAT rolled. He refused to cooperate, and around 10:20 p.m., “officers used a Taser and K9 units to take the suspect” into custody. (LBPD, Long Beach Post)
3) The LBPD ran a DUI checkpoint last Friday at PCH near Channel Drive. Of the 1,160 vehicles coming through, officers screened 376 cars between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. “One driver was arrested for driving under the influence.” “Three drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license.” (LBPD)
4) Where can you watch the World Cup Soccer Championship in Long Beach? Legends at 5236 East 2nd Street is a prime destination. The restaurant and sports bar will open at 8 a.m. for the early matches. Gallagher’s Pub at 2751 East Broadway promises to open for “every game with Mexico, the U.S., Argentina, Brazil, France.” Other venues opening for the 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. matches include Shannon’s on Pine, K.C. Branaghan and The Hawk. (The HiLo)
5) It’s time to participate in the annual ball drive of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach! The organization, which serves around 2,500 kids across the city, is looking for “basketballs, softballs, footballs, dodgeballs, volleyballs, kick balls, tether balls, and tennis balls — and, of course, soccer balls.” Collection boxes are out now through December 12. You can find them at Legends on 2nd Street; Big 5 Sporting Goods and First Bank on PCH; The Boys & Girls Club and Phil Trani’s Restaurant on Long Beach Boulevard; and the Boathouse on the Bay Restaurant on Marine Drive. Boxes with a QR code let you access the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Amazon Wish List for additional donation opportunities. (subscription/Press-Telegram)
