Plane Crashes Into Roof Of Long Beach Airport Hangar

The pilot of the small plane emerged with only minor injuries after the plane nose-dived into the hangar.

LONG BEACH, CA — A pilot managed to escape major injury after crashing a single-engine plane into the roof of a building at the Long Beach Airport Monday. Aside from the pilot's minor injuries, there were no immediate reports of people on the ground being hurt by the crash.

The crash happened just before 2:30 p.m. in the 2900 block of E. Spring Street, near the 405 Freeway, according to a Long Beach Fire Department spokesman. Reports from the scene showed a small Cessna 172 nose-first halfway into the roof of a large hangar.

The pilot, who was the only person aboard the plane, was examined at the scene and was later taken to a hospital for minor injuries, the spokesman said.

The pilot was walking about before being taken to the hospital.

There was no immediate word on what caused the plane to crash and whether it had just taken off or was attempting to land when the crash occurred.
