Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- Once again, the LBPD had a busy weekend. On Sunday, at around 2:43 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop “near Pacific Coast Highway and Pine Avenue” when they learned that a passenger had a gunshot wound. “Officers located evidence near the traffic stop, including a casing, indicating a shooting had occurred.” On Sunday at 8:54 p.m., the police responded to a shots-fired call in “the 500 block of East Esther Street” where they found a home “had been struck by gunfire.” On Monday morning at around 2:10 a.m., officers went to “the 200 block of West Del Amo Boulevard” where someone was stabbed. (LBPD, 2)
- Did you see the dark smoke in east LB on Sunday morning? It came from the Haynes Generating Station at 6801 2nd Street. This station is a “1738-megawatt (MW) natural gas and other biomass gas power station” that is owned by the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power. A spokesperson for the LBFD explained that the smoke “was caused by the DWP ‘burning off product’” and that “there’s no hazard.” (GEM, LA Times/paywall)
- The city wants you to weigh in on the proposed FY 23 budget. Although there was already a community engagement session in January, you now have until August 24 to make your voice heard. You might also participate in virtual meetings on this Thursday, on August 17, and on August 22. (City of LB, 2)
- Goodwill will host a job fair. It focuses on “career opportunities in event security and related hospitality positions, with the chance to interview and receive job offers on-site.” If you don’t yet have a guard card, Goodwill offers the training you need. “The job fair will take place on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Long Beach Goodwill headquarters at 800 W. Pacific Coast Highway.” (Long Beach Post)
- Mark your calendars! Friends of Long Beach Animals will celebrate its 33rd anniversary with a casino night fundraiser. Scheduled for August 26, it will be at The Modern and kick off at 7 p.m. You are encouraged to “dress to impress!” You may know this organization from programs such as offering free vet care with July pet adoptions, free microchipping just ahead of July 4th, and its partnerships with other groups such as The Little Lion Foundation. - A neighbor in the Cliff May Ranchos area is upset about someone walking his dog without picking up after the animal. (Nextdoor)
- Our DeForest Park-South neighbor is posting in hopes that someone may spot their car on the street or in a parking lot. A Hyundai was stolen early Saturday morning. The back bumper isn’t buffed, so it’s not as shiny as the rest of the car. (Nextdoor)
