A Retro Row business of renown is moving. Also, someone attempted to steal from a non-profit that serves the poorest of the poor in downtown. Finally, containers are piling up again at the port.

💧 Water Crisis Poll! 💧
Residents are limited to watering their landscapes two days per week, before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. What else should the City do to deal with the water crisis? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 18.5% want to mandate drought-resistant landscaping, 20.7% want to recycle wastewater for irrigation, another 40.2% want to build a desalination plant at the coast, and 20.7% don’t believe residential water use contributes to the water crisis.
Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- The Portfolio Coffeehouse, which some credit with being “the center of community in the up-and-coming neighborhood,” is leaving its Retro Row location at 4th and Junipero. It closes on July 24 and will reopen in the fall “on Cherry Avenue just south of Fourth Street in a move that will merge the coffeehouse with (a) second business, Berlin Bistro, which will relocate from its current location near Downtown.” A landlord dispute and litigation led to the move. (LB Post)
- Over the Independence Day weekend, someone tried to steal the 2015 Chevy panel truck used by Christian Outreach in Action. COA is an organization that serves the poor in the downtown area with food and hot meals. The attempted theft damaged the truck to the tune of $8,000. A Go Fund Me account has raised $3,085 so far. (Press-Telegram)
- A Monday report raises the alarm that “the pileup of import containers waiting on Southern California terminal yards is rapidly reapproaching its peak” at the port. In LB, the number of containers sitting for nine days is higher than in October. The benefit of the threatened container fee, which was never collected, is gone. “Long Beach had 28,723 containers dwelling nine days or more as of Monday. That’s 9% higher than the total in late October.” The port blames “backups at key rail yards elsewhere in the U.S.” (Freight Waves)
- Los Angeles County has been signaling for a while that it may bring back the indoor mask mandate by the end of July. However, we learned on Tuesday that Long Beach health officials may not do so right away. “We’ll have to see where we’re at at the time that LA County is implementing the mandate,” Long Beach Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis said. (LB Post)
- Mark your calendars! If you are keeping your boat at a Long Beach marina, you will see a slip fee increase on October 1. The monthly charge will go up by 3%, which goes back to a 2015 agreement and “a $125 million revenue bond sale.” What does this mean in dollars and cents? “The fee for the most common slip, 20-foot spaces, will be $166.71 a month, compared to the current $161.85. At the other end of the scale, someone in a 100-foot slip will see an increase of $84.08 a month, from $2,802.54 to $2,886.62.” (Press-Telegram)
