📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) On Tuesday, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) responded to the report of a non-fatal stabbing in the 500 block of Long Beach Boulevard. Officers interviewed a male adult victim at the hospital. They went to the “area described by the victim, but were unable to locate a crime scene.” (LBPD)
2) Outgoing Third District City Council member Suzie Price is taking on the Belmont Shore Residents Association and similar groups. Although leaving office on December 20, she is asking the City Council to make changes to the parklet permit process, and approve them at the Council’s December 13 meeting. She wants to reduce community groups’ influence from “unilaterally disallowing parklets within a geographic location” to “providing meaningful feedback” to staff members making the decision. (Press-Telegram)
3) The city is still looking for a site to open a winter homeless shelter. We learned on Wednesday that it's negotiating with the Community Hospital at 1720 Termino to make space for the homeless. This East Long Beach venue is currently not in use. Residents of the Bryant neighborhood had an opportunity to weigh in on Tuesday. You may remember that the city transferred ownership of the facility to MWN Community Hospital in October, and it's unknown if the new owner is on board. Even so, Council member Suzie Price’s office said the proposal was “fairly final,” but there is no official statement. (Long Beach Post)
4) Long Beach opens its inaugural Youth Poet Laureate application process on January 10. If you know a youth between the ages of 13 and 18 who writes poetry, is active in the community, and looks for ways to make a positive impact, encourage them to attend the workshops currently offered at various neighborhood libraries. These are designed to assist any aspiring Youth Poet Laureate with preparing their application and finding their place in the community. Good luck! (Long Beach Public Library)
5) The Hello Kitty Cafe pop-up is returning to Long Beach! You can find it on Saturday, when it will park near Sephora at 2ND & PCH on Seaport Way. It will be there from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and it’s an “all-pink café on wheels carrying exclusive treats and collectibles celebrating all things Hello Kitty.” If you’re looking for totes, T-shirts, lunchboxes, mugs, coin banks and plush toys, this is the place to be! (2ND & PCH)
