Probe Continues Into Fatal Shooting Near Long Beach Grand Prix

The man was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

LONG BEACH, CA — A homicide investigation was continuing Sunday into the fatal shooting of a man in downtown Long Beach, close to where the Long Beach Grand Prix was taking place.

The shooting was reported at 5:50 p.m. Saturday in the 0 block of Cedar Walk, near Pacific Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, where officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, Long Beach Police Department reported.

The man was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The identity of the victim was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Police say the victim and suspect engaged in a verbal dispute, which escalated when the suspect shot the victim. Officers appeared to detain at least one person amid a heavy police response, according to the Long Beach Post, but it was unclear whether that person or anyone else was arrested.

Homicide detectives temporarily cordoned off nearby streets as the investigation continued, but the Grand Prix was uninterrupted.
