The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Long Beach.

(Patch Media)

Hey, hello; today is National SCUD Day, which Stephanie West Allen founded in 2007 as “National Savor the Comic, Unplug the Drama Day!” I'm back with your new edition of the Long Beach Daily. Let's get this Friday started off right, with a quick review of everything you need to know about what's happening in town...

North LB might get a pool – maybe. Also, there will definitely be no speedboat races at Marine Stadium. Finally, you have additional time to comment on the PD’s military equipment policies.

💧 Water Crisis Poll! 💧
Residents are limited to watering their landscapes two days per week, before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. What else should the City do to deal with the water crisis? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 22.6% want to mandate drought-resistant landscaping, 17.7% want to recycle wastewater for irrigation, another 38.7% want to build a desalination plant at the coast, and 21% don’t believe residential water use contributes to the water crisis.

Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Will Ramona Park get a public swimming pool? The answer is maybe – if the City can find $10 million to build it and the funds to operate it. We learned on Wednesday that Ramona Park would be the favored site, beating out Houghton and Scherer. “It would likely be an outdoor pool, which would cut down on construction and operating costs, but would still require areas for staff and for storing chemicals and mechanical equipment in addition to a locker room, restrooms, and showers.” (LB Post)
  2. We have talked in the past about the speedboat races in Marine Stadium and the City’s unwillingness to grant permits. On Wednesday, the Southern California Speedboat Club officially cancelled the Long Beach Sprint Nationals speedboat races that were scheduled for August 6 and 7. “The City drug this out to ensure that the Long Beach Sprint Nationals wouldn’t happen this year,” the organizer said about the appeal. The City cited “significant safety concerns.” (Press-Telegram)
  3. Assembly Bill 481 has put the LBPD in the position of having to “catalog their military equipment and create policies for their use.” We previously discussed the inventory that became public as a result. On Tuesday, the City Council voted “to delay the approval of the police department’s new, state-mandated military equipment use policy in order to give residents more time to comment on the policy.” At issue is the LBPD’s late addition of a “Strongwatch Freedom On-The-Move mobile surveillance system.” (Signal Tribune)
  4. The LB Fire Department will host a female firefighter career workshop on Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Taking place at the Captain David Rosa Regional Training Center, applicants should attend in workout attire and bring work gloves. There’ll be a fitness challenge, written test and interview. (Long Beach Fire Department)
  5. Mark your calendars! There will be a pet Adoption Bonanza & Craft Fair on July 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Head to the LB Towne Center for a western-themed event with “over 200 adoptable animals.” Local vendors and a western themed photo booth are part of the experience! (Animal Care Services)

Are you a Long Beach resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
