Supernaw Leads In Long Beach District 4 City Council Race

LONG BEACH, CA — Incumbent Daryl Supernaw pulled ahead in the race for City Council member of Long Beach's 4th District Tuesday night, according to preliminary election results.

As of 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Supernaw had about 60 percent of the vote, or 10,214 total votes counted. Challenger Herlinda Chico trailed behind with about 40 percent of the vote, or 6,908 total votes counted.

According to the Los Angeles County Registrar, only 2,615,541 of the county's 5,736,803 registered voters' ballots had been counted as of Wednesday morning.

Both Supernaw and Chico advanced in the March primary, with Supernaw securing 48.4 percent of the vote and Chico receiving 25.5 percent of the vote.

Supernaw has served as District 4 council member since he was elected in 2015 and is currently completing his second term. Born and raised in Long Beach, Supernaw attended all levels of schooling in the city and earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State
University, Long Beach.

"As a lifelong resident of Council District 4, I am proud to have served as your representative since 2015. I am now running for re-election to a final 4-year term," Supernaw said in a statement.

During his time in office, Supernaw has had many successes including the restoration of Fire Engine 17, approval of an ordinance addressing street racing takeovers and a "retail renaissance" surrounding the Traffic Circle.

Chico has lived in Long Beach for over 20 years and has been a part of many boards in the city including the City of Long Beach Parks and Recreation Commission and the Mental Health Advisory Group. Chico earned her Bachelor's Degree in Communications from California State
University, San Bernardino.

"My 25 years of solving complex neighborhood issues and expanding direct community engagement are what we need to make a positive change. Our district's dynamics have undergone significant changes after redistricting, and it requires a leader on the City Council who will fight for our neighborhoods, priorities, and quality of life," Chico told Patch.

If elected, Chico told Patch she will prioritize public safety by advocating for policies that tackle the root of rising crime and provide transparent oversight. Chico said her specific goals include effectively clearing homeless encampments, connecting individuals with essential services and ensuring the best use of existing resources.
