Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- Judi Doyle, the co-founder of Long Beach Pride and inductee into Equality Park, died at the age of 78 earlier this year. The long-time civil rights activist weathered opposition and death threats. She had to wear a bulletproof vest in 1985 to walk in the Long Beach Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade. “Confronting hate and threats against the LGBTQ+ community are a part of Doyle’s legacy.” We learned on Monday that she died in her sleep from “complications of Alzheimer’s disease.” (Q Voice News)
- A man drowned on Monday in one of the lakes at El Dorado Park. Witnesses said that what appeared to be an older man (LBFD said he was in his 80s) went into the lake around 5 p.m. Divers recovered his body “in a patch of reeds” at 6:45 p.m. According to authorities, “there were no immediate signs of foul play.” (Press-Telegram, LBFD)
- There is a recall of fresh organic strawberries. They may be linked to cases of hepatitis A. Sold between March 5 and April 25, they were “branded as FreshKampo or H-E-B.” Retailers selling the strawberries include Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, Walmart and others. If you routinely freeze strawberries, you might want to check. (Patch)
- On Sunday afternoon, at around 5:57 p.m., the LBPD headed to the 1000 block of Cedar Avenue after receiving reports of shots fired. It turned out that a man had accidentally fired a gun inside his home. “The firearm was legally registered and taken for safekeeping by officers.” (LBPD)
- Mark your calendars! If you have been job hunting but have had a difficult time finding what you were looking for, head to the Convention Center on June 7 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for the “Long Beach Community Job Fair, an in-person multi-sector job fair.” Represented industries include, “aerospace, aviation, advanced manufacturing, construction, utilities, environmental services, government/non-profit, healthcare, IT, financial services, hospitality, retail, tourism and transportation, distribution and logistics.” This is a great opportunity for recent college grads! (City of LB)
