Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- If the sizzle of a steak arriving at your restaurant table is music to your ears, we have good news! Ruth’s Chris Steak House opened on Monday at 180 East Ocean Boulevard. “The restaurant is open for dinner Monday through Saturday from 4-10 p.m. and Sundays from 4-9 p.m., as well as a happy hour from 4-6 p.m. Sunday through Friday.” (LB Business Journal)
- On April 11, we discussed that the El Dorado Duck Pond project was paused during nesting season, which would also allow the City Council to find the $3 million it needs to finish upgrades. On Tuesday, we learned that Public Works will host a virtual meting on August 10 to give the community an update. “Construction should start next month and be complete in late 2023.” Funding is coming from “the city’s Measure A tax fund, Los Angeles County’s Measure W, LA County Regional Park and Open Space District grants and federal grants.” (Patch, Press-Telegram)
- Update on the Health Care Wage Hike: As the City Council continues to mull over adopting a $25 minimum wage “for all employees at private health care facilities” or passing the responsibility to voters in November, we learned of the Economic Development Commission report that was revealed on Tuesday. According to the stats, “raising health care wages could eliminate upward of 58 jobs in Long Beach.” Also, “to pay for those increased labor costs, hospital providers could raise prices for patients, dip into profits, reduce investments in equipment or close locations that are already struggling.” On the other hand, those who keep their jobs could see “a net income change of between $7 million and $9.9 million.” (Long Beach Post)
- Long Beach began offering the Novavax vaccine on Monday. Recently approved, this COVID-19 vaccine is protein-based and “developed without the use of mRNA technology.” This vaccine is for adults only, comes in a two-shot series, and has no recommended boosters. (KNX News)
- Mark your calendars! The Collect-A-Con is coming to the Long Beach Convention Center! This is the “Nation’s Largest Trading Card, Anime & Pop Culture Convention.” It is scheduled for August 20 and 21, will have more than 500 dealer booths, feature vintage toys right next to TCG cards, and have a crop of celebs, concerts, and comics.
