Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. A man was shot Tuesday night a little after 10 p.m. LBPD dispatched officers “to the intersection of 8th Street and Cedar Avenue,” where they found the shooting victim. The suspects were long gone when the cops got there. (LBPD)
  2. The Naples Island Swim is coming! It will take place on August 21 beginning at 9 a.m. Head to “the beach next to the Leeway Sailing & Aquatics Center.” While nobody really remembers why it started, we do know it goes back to 1903. This year’s “grand marshal is Steven Munatones, president of the World Open Water Swimming Association,” who will oversee the estimated 600 swimmers. (Press-Telegram)
  3. The city announced on Wednesday that it would begin enforcement “of short-term rentals (STRs) operating in the coastal zone areas” on September 6. The California Coastal Commission suggested this change, meaning STR operators must now register with the City. “Otherwise, the operation of their STRs will be considered illegal and operators would be subject to a $1,000 fine.” (City of LB)
  4. The medical building on West Wardlow Road near the I-405 has a new owner. The name is not disclosed, but we know the sales price was $7 million. The building “will be converted to office space for the buyer’s expanding business needs.” (Connect CRE)
  5. Mark your calendars! The 2022 NFL season kick-off event is scheduled for September 8 at Alamitos Beach. Festivities begin at noon and include a concert by J Balvin, the possibility to rub elbows with Rams players, and a space to “take selfies with the Vince Lombardi Trophy.” Best of all, it’s free!
