🌱Shots Fired On South St. + Wilson, Poly HS Students Want Gun Control
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Long Beach.

Hello all; today is National SAFE Day, which was founded in 2016 by the Brooklynn Mae Mohler Foundation. It's me, Sylvia, your host of the Daily. Let's get this Saturday started off right, with a quick review of the most important things going on these days in town.
It’s another repeat of the story in which a verbal altercation escalates into shots fired. Also, high schoolers protested for gun control. Finally, Breeze Airways is coming to the Long Beach Airport.

📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in Long Beach. If the police are called, you may have to pay as much as $20,000 in response costs plus citation fines of $1,000. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 62.9% don’t want fireworks, 25.7% want “safe and sane fireworks,” and 2.9% don’t care one way or the other while another 8.6% want to buy what they choose.)

Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- On Wednesday evening, at around 7:48 p.m., the LBPD was alerted to a shooting in the 300 block of South Street. Nobody was hurt, but there was plenty of evidence, “including casings and strike marks.” They believe that two groups of suspects got into a verbal altercation that escalated. However, everyone fled before officers arrived. (LBPD Blotter)
- Friday was a day that Long Beach high schoolers took to “protest gun violence and call for stricter gun control.” Woodrow Wilson HS students met in the school’s courtyard. Long Beach Polytechnic HS students did the same. Some wore shirts that read, "Am I Next?" (CBS)
- JetBlue may have pulled out of the Long Beach Airport, but its founders aren’t done. Breeze Airways acquired a flight slot that Delta gave up. There’s no word yet on the destinations, but insiders point out that there aren’t yet any direct flights to the East Coast out of LB. (LB Business Journal)
- There’s scuttlebutt that L.A. County will bring back indoor masking. Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer confirmed that the current COVID-19 transmission rate could move from “medium” to “high” by the end of the month, which would “again require that masks be worn in all indoor public settings.” Alameda County already returned to wearing masks on Friday. (Patch)
- Would you take investment advice from a 46-year-old inmate “convicted in 2015 of defrauding investors?” Somebody did because we learned on Thursday that the Long Beach man received an additional eight-year sentence “after pleading guilty to running a $1.4 million Ponzi scheme while behind bars.” (Long Beach Post)
