📰 Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

1) Shoutout to Nevroz “Nevi” Keser Gruskin! The 27-year-old is a “fourth-year interior design student at Cal State Long Beach's College of the Arts.” We learned on Tuesday that she received “the top CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement, the CSU’s highest recognition of student achievement.” Congratulations! (California State University, Long Beach)

2) Mineshaft bar stabbing update: There is an arrest in the murder of a 28-year-old patron of the Mineshaft at 1720 East Broadway. The LBPD announced that they arrested a 56-year-old man on Monday. Detectives said there were two altercations involving the victim. “During the first altercation, the victim(s) were involved in a fight with a man who was armed with a “taser” in front of a business. Moments later, a second altercation occurred in which (the suspect) got into a physical fight with the two victims, which escalated to (the suspect’s) stabbing (of) both victims. He then took off on a bicycle. The man with the “taser” was detained at the scene and arrested on an unrelated charge.” The suspect is now at the LB City Jail on $2,000,000 bail. “Currently, there is no evidence this is a hate or bias motivated incident.” (LBPD)

3) Long Beach is testing a free micro-shuttle program “around downtown and its southeastern waterfront.” On Tuesday, the City Council awarded a two-year contract to Circuit Transit Inc., which provided DTLB transportation as The Free Ride in 2018. The service will begin toward the end of October and operate around DTLB (Magnolia Avenue to Cherry Avenue) and Belmont Shore (Livingston Avenue to the border with Seal Beach). (Long Beach Post)

4) Every Long Beach Unified School District middle and high school now has a wellness center. Jill Baker, ED. D. made the announcement on Tuesday. “Wellness Centers provide free, confidential services while connecting students, families and staff to vital community resources.” They are not crisis centers, however. (Jill Baker, ED. D.)

5) Mark your calendars! There is a free citizenship workshop Saturday at the Jenny Oropeza Community Center at 401 Golden Avenue. Attendees can receive assistance with filling out citizenship applications. You can also find out if you qualify for the USCIS filing fee assistance. If you plan to attend, please registration.
