📰 Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

1) A man reportedly died by suicide Friday afternoon. First responders were called to 14th Place and Ocean Boulevard, which is near Bluff Park. During their investigation, the LBPD closed “beach access stairs at 14th Place” and “one lane of Ocean Boulevard.” (Long Beach Post)

2) What’s happening at the apartment complex in the 2300 block of East 2nd Street? The LBPD was dispatched Thursday evening and booked a 58-year-old woman on “one count of felony criminal threats, one count of felony possession of a firearm in violation of a court order, and one count of misdemeanor violating a restraining order.” According to the residents, the suspect has been tormenting them with racial slurs and threats of violence. She “was arrested in July and the case was presented to the Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office for filing consideration” but "ended up right back at the complex." The apartment management company has “been trying to evict (her) since May but faced some legal challenges.” (Fox)

3) The sixth council district is cutting crime by adding lighting. Councilwoman Suely Saro announced on Friday that Doidge Court received a new streetlight for improving “safety by deterring and allowing pedestrians and motorists to see each other.” (Suely Saro)

4) Would the high school student in your life like to earn three transferable college credits for free? Check out the Ocean Conservation and Community Science Course offered by the Aquarium of the Pacific in partnership with Orange Coast College. It runs from August 30 to December 15. “Instruction and labs will take place in-person and on-site at the aquarium fall semester, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6 – 8:30 p.m.” (Aquarium of the Pacific)

5) Mark your calendars! Gusto Bread at 2710 East 4th Street is celebrating its second birthday with a raffle and cake! How often do you see the terms “radical” and “sourdough” in the same sentence? We learned on Thursday that this description perfectly describes the conchas you can buy there. “If you prefer a sweeter and more decadent variation on the concha, the cutely named “doñas” are day-old conchas that come filled with seasonal jams like guava or peach with strawberry with xoconostle (sour cactus fruit), then baked again, so the concha becomes extra crispy.” (L.A. Taco)
