Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- Back on June 4, a 24-year-old LB man was shot to death near 14th Street and Walnut Avenue. On Friday, the LBPD announced the arrest of five suspects. They range in age from 15 years to 47. Three people were “booked for one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.” They include the 15-year-old. (LBPD)
- The next time you head to your pharmacy at “Albertsons, Pavilions, Ralphs and Vons” might be a different experience. Union leaders announced on Friday that members had authorized a strike. While there is no date for the strike set yet, we know that it would affect five stores within the city limits. (LB Business Journal)
- The City’s Age-Friendly Initiative exercise classes for older adults started last week. Going forward, it “will be held Thursdays at the McBride Park Senior Center and Tuesdays at the Chavez Park Senior Center from 11 to 11:50 a.m.” You don’t have to register. However, classes close once they reach capacity. (City of LB)
- Freshly-minted Long Beach Poly quarterbacks Nico and Madden Iamaleava, who played for Warren in 2021 and transferred to Poly for the Spring, are returning to Warren for the next season. This puts the heat on Darius Curry, and insiders said that “the Jackrabbits will need to develop some depth behind him with no other players who’ve taken varsity QB reps in a game.” (The562.org)
- Mark your calendars! Simply Salad is coming to 1775 Ximeno Avenue toward the end of August. It’ll be in the “now-vacant restaurant space between the Starbucks and Jimmy John’s” at the Traffic Circle. Owners call it the “Subway of salads,” and considering the surrounding fast-food places, it is certainly a welcome addition! (The HiLo)
