📰 2022 News Poll 📍
There was a lot of bad news in 2022. However, there was some great news, too. Which was your favorite good news story of 2022? So far, 43.3% like the collaboration to end plastic pollution, while 25% favor the news that Ethiopia’s civil war is over. 16.7% like news of a new malaria vaccine, and the final 25% are excited about hydrogen-powered trains.
📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- In October, rapper Half Ounce was shot and killed in the 700 block of South New Hampshire Avenue. Now, two arrests were made in the case. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced Tuesday that they apprehended two adult males “at separate locations in Long Beach.” Each suspect has been charged with murder. (Long Beach Post)
- Who vandalized the parking lot book drop at the El Dorado branch library? Reportedly, passersby noticed smoke and bad smells coming from the drop. Firefighters were alerted and said that someone had dropped a firework into the book drop. For now, the library staff asks you to “use the book drops next to the front door.” (Long Beach Public Library)
- A bunch of new laws are taking effect today that’ll affect you. For example, you’ll see three new state holidays on the calendar. They’re Juneteenth (June 19), the Lunar New Year (the date moves), and Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day (April 24). Besides that, jaywalking is now decriminalized, and retailers may no longer charge the so-called pink tax for “products that are marketed toward women” when they are “substantially similar” to products not specifically marketed this way. You may also hear about yellow alerts, which pertain to driver details in fatal hit-and-run crashes. (Press-Telegram/paywall, Patch)
- Why is the Long Beach Health Department tweeting about murine typhus? “It is transmitted to humans by coming in contact with infected fleas. Symptoms include a rash, body aches, muscle, pain, fever, coughing and nausea, and vomiting.” It turns out that the 27 cases reported in 2021 were the “most cases of typhus . . . than any previous year.” (Long Beach Health Department, 2)
- Long Beach Animal Care Services has a foster program! We learned on Friday that Coordinator Tabare Depaep built the program from the ground up and is ready to welcome more volunteers. “Depaep currently oversees 55 fosters and says that fostering is ‘great for the pets.’” Best of all, “you don’t have to have money to do it.” If you’ve made a New Year’s resolution to volunteer in the community, consider the animals! (Long Beach Post)
