The kids are going back to school soon. Should schools still take COVID precautions? Please let me know your thoughts! As of right now, 39.7% say the kids should just go back to school, 26% say that kids should wear masks, 30.1% want there to be distancing and sanitizing, while 4.1% prefer distance learning for the kids.


Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. There was SWAT activity on Wednesday afternoon in “the area of Elm Avenue and Seventh Street.” Officers were looking for a suspect in a “in a gun-related crime two weeks earlier.” The individual allegedly pointed a gun at a man on July 13. Despite SWAT, “a helicopter and K9 units,” it appears that the suspect got away. (Long Beach Post)
  2. We learned on Wednesday that the Breakers Hotel shall now be known as Fairmont The Breakers. The historic landmark at 200 East Ocean Boulevard has undergone multiple use changes since its opening in 1925. The opening as a boutique hotel will likely take place in October 2023.   3. Monkeypox update: The city announced on Wednesday that it “increased its stockpile of monkeypox vaccine.” At this time, 300 people have received the vaccine, but there is a list of 1,600 individuals who had registered to receive the inoculation. “Long Beach received 500 more doses over the weekend and is starting to call those people back to schedule appointments.” (LB Post)
  4. Have you noticed the fairy doors that have been popping up at ten locations throughout the city? These are “miniature, wooden, handcrafted and meticulously decorated doors that reveal an imaginary world.” These decorative touches are the creations of Debbie Martin and Gary Ramos, who put them up for free. “Doors can be requested through the Instagram page @fairydoorsoflongbeach and will be completed in the order in which they are received.” (Signal Hill Tribune)
  5. Mark your calendars! The LBFD will host a Red Cross Blood Drive on August 4 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. You can make an appointment before heading off to 3205 Lakewood Boulevard. (LBFD)

  • A kind-hearted Historic Zaferia Village-Cir area neighbor laid some flowers and plush pup at a memorial for a 7-year-old boy who died in a tragic accident while crossing the street with his dad on Lakewood yesterday evening.
