Hi there, Long Beach; today is National Bagelfest Day, which was founded in 1986 by Murray Lender of Lender's Bagels! I'm here in your inbox this summer morning to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on in town. Because community news matters!

Three people were detained in a deadly shooting on Cedar Avenue. Also, why did several fires flare up near Spring Street and the River? Finally, is there a crime scene on Artesia Boulevard?

Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. There was a fatal shooting in the 2300 block of Cedar Avenue on Sunday in the early evening. SWAT rolled to deal with suspects “possibly barricaded in a nearby residence.” The LBPD detained “three persons of interest.”(Fox)
  2. The LBFD responded to a fire in the area of Spring Street and the San Gabriel River. Reports of the blaze came in at 2:17 a.m. on Sunday. “Fire crews found multiple fires burning in dry brush in a 300-square-foot area,” which led to the temporary closure of the El Dorado Park Nature Center. Nobody was hurt. (LB Post)
  3. On Monday morning, right around 1:41 a.m., the LBPD dispatched officers to interview an adult male gunshot victim at a hospital. The victim said that “he was riding his bicycle near the area of Long Beach Boulevard and Artesia Boulevard when a vehicle pulled up alongside him. Two unknown male suspects exited the vehicle and took his cell phone, resulting in an altercation between both parties that escalated to the shooting.” When officers went to the alleged crime area, they couldn’t locate a crime scene. (LBPD)
  4. Trash rates are going through the roof. We learned on Monday that there is a proposal to “raise residential rates by $5.43 a month on Sept. 1, then another $6.45 a month on Jan. 1.” If you run a business, prepare yourself for “a 29.25% hike in September and another 40.14% increase on Jan. 1.” It is interesting to note that “more than half of the individual rate payers” have to protest the increase to prevent its implementation. The public hearing “is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, in the Civic Chamber.” (Press-Telegram)
  5. Have you checked out Cali Chilli, which opened in May at 4111 North Viking Way? It’s hard to describe the menu. It “plays with chicken tikka by adding parmesan and white truffle oil, eschewing heavy chili pepper and ginger in favor of warm Italian flavors.” Also, there are “nachos and quesadillas, American comfort foods, flatbreads, and Korean spins across dinner and brunch.” Most interesting of all, a “Michelin-level chef” is calling the shots.
