Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- Alleged vehicular manslaughter claimed the life of a 62-year-old man pushing a 1991 Dodge van. The accident occurred on Saturday around 5:22 p.m. in the 300 block of East Market Street. A 33-year-old Los Angeles resident struck the Dodge with his 2013 Lexus, “pinning the male victim between the Lexus and the Dodge. The impact then caused the Dodge to collide into an unoccupied, parked Nissan truck.” Reportedly, the driver “was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and had an expired California Driver License.” (Long Beach Police Department)
- A shoutout to first-grader Marlon Levi Price! We learned on Tuesday that the seven-year-old “has been invited to compete in the Skateboard National Championship on Jan. 21.” This event is for skaters under the age of 18. It’s interesting to note that this isn’t Price’s first rodeo. “Last year, after only standing up on a board for a year, he came in second in the competition and third place in the video category of street division.” (Press-Telegram)
- Have you visited Whaley Park lately? Long Beach Public Works is proud of its work at 5620 Atherton Street! It features “an arts & sciences theme, intended to enhance the robust arts & sciences programming & camps available” at the community center. (Long Beach Public Works)
- Did you know that Long Beach Chief of Police, Wally Hebeish, and Chief Xavier Espino of the Long Beach Fire Department accepted the inaugural presentation of The Spirit of St. Mary Award? We didn’t either; however, we learned on Friday that this award recognizes those “who live HumanKindness.” “When we call for help, you come,” the President/CEO of Dignity Health - St. Mary Medical Center said when presenting the awards. (Beachcomber)
- Viaje opened Friday at 5 p.m.! Joining other Belmont Shore eateries, the new restaurant is located at 5224 East 2nd Street. Dishes include pulpo, barbacoa de cordero, prime bone-in ribeye, and more! Make your reservations early. (Viaje Restaurant)
