Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. What was happening Friday morning near MacArthur Park? Just after midnight, police officers found a 33-year-old man dead on the street in the “1400 block of Gundry Avenue.” By 5:20 a.m., the LBPD had roped off a second area “on Warren Avenue across MacArthur Park.” “Long Beach police confirmed the death is being investigated as a possible homicide.” (LBPD, NBC)
  2. The former Long Beach school resource officer who allegedly shot an 18-year-old woman in a car near Millikan High School was released on bond Thursday. The shooting occurred in September, and he pleaded not guilty to murder in December. At the time, bail was set at $2 million. (Fox)
  3. Do you know families with infants up to nine months old “who participate in a federal assistance program?” They are eligible to receive infant formula beginning on August 2. Distribution sites are St. Mary’s WIC office (Tuesday), the Ron Arias Health Equity Center (Thursday), Silverado Park (Friday), and the Main Health Office (Saturday). “Each location will carry both Enfamil Infant Instant Formula Milk-based Powder with Iron and Similac Advance Powder Baby Formula. The Health Department will distribute formula throughout August, while supplies last.” (City of LB)
  4. We have previously talked about the 2nd annual Burger Week that runs from August 7 to 14. However, we learned today that its official kick-off will be an event at the Samaritan House on August 2. “Four top Long Beach chefs/restaurateurs will treat over 200 homeless men, women, and children to a multi-course burger lunch.” (LB Local News)
