📢 Fireworks Poll Results
Fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles. Scofflaws may be fined $500, $1,000, or more. We asked how you felt about that. You responded. 77% don’t want fireworks, 13% want “safe and sane fireworks,” 9% want to choose what to buy, and another 1% don’t care one way or the other.
Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:
- There was a brush fire Friday afternoon near 12001 Montague Street. The LAFD began receiving reports around 3:15 p.m., when half an acre was burning. By 5:30 p.m., the blaze had consumed 12 acres. At 7:30, the FD announced containment of the brush fire. (Patch)
- Who is flying with a jetpack over LAX? On Thursday, a pilot spotted one at 2:45 p.m. and called it in. However, investigations of sightings remain unverified. “One working theory is that pilots might have seen balloons.” (CBS)
- Friday’s protests in the wake of the Roe v. Wade decision began peacefully but ended with “violent clashes between demonstrators and police, with bottles and rocks being hurled at officers.” In response, the LAPD went on tactical alert. SWAT rolled as some demonstrators set off fireworks near police officers and crowds entered the freeways. (KTLA)
- We learned on Thursday that Council Member Paul Koretz is working on a proposal that would prevent the construction of new gas stations. This news goes hand in hand with the City Council’s plans to “outlaw the sale of gas-powered cars in 2035.” Proponents say that “drawing a line in the sand on expanding climate-crippling infrastructure that will only be disused in 15 years would seem to be a pretty sensible idea.” Critics note that large corporations with convenience stores added to gas stations “are broadening their footprint.” (Jalopnik)
- Mark your calendars! The Freestyle Under The Stars event at the Stevens Outdoor Arena is coming on July 8! Tickets for the July 9 are already sold out, but July 8 and 10 still look good. (All Events)
