Good day, neighbors; today is National Empanada Day! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Los Angeles Daily.

Firefighters returned to the scene of the earlier fire to put out hot spots. Also, illegally parked RVs have to drive away or be towed. Finally, there’s a new 0.6-mile stretch of protected bike lanes.

  1. Chatsworth Brush Fire Update: We talked on Wednesday about the fire that the LAFD contained and put out. However, it re-emerged on Thursday morning. Once again, firefighters responded “to a report of fire on the state Route 118, Ronald Reagan Freeway, near Topanga Canyon Boulevard.” The CHP said that firefighters were putting out hot spots from Wednesday’s fire. 2. The City Council voted on Wednesday to resume the enforcement of illegally parked vehicles, in particular, RVs that “line city streets, in many cases surrounded by garbage, blocking sidewalks and creating a possible threat to residents.” Homeowners and landlords with vacancies want them gone from in front of their properties. However, people living in the RVs have no place to go. “The deadline to remove those RVs is May 15, but the city warns that any that don’t run or aren’t registered may be towed.” (KTLA)
  3. On Wednesday morning, L.A. City Councilmember Nithya Raman hosted the ribbon cutting “for the city of L.A.’s newest protected bike lanes.” They span “a 0.6-mile stretch of Riverside Drive between Los Feliz Boulevard and Glendale Boulevard, immediately southeast of Griffith Park.” (LA Street Blog)
  4. On Tuesday, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors approved a pilot program that offers “free access to feminine hygiene products, diapers and other personal care items at various government facilities.” These would be libraries, parks, and social services departments. “The motion notes that state universities, along with community colleges and middle/high schools, will soon begin offering free feminine hygiene products on campuses.” (NBC)
  5. Are you interested in green-collar work? Have you had a difficult time finding training programs? We learned Thursday that the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) offers “green jobs fellowship and training is no-cost to applicants.” “Green Jobs pay 12% more than the LA County Average, and 75% of Green Jobs are accessible without a bachelor’s degree,” which means that you could be in your new career quickly.
