🌱 Bonin Against Encampment Ban + Westlake’s St. Vincent To Reopen?

Hello again, everybody; today is International Drop a Rock Day, which was founded in 2015 by the Word Rocks Project! It's Sunday in Los Angeles, and I'm back in your inbox to get you caught up on all the most important things happening in the community today.

Why did a member of the City Council vote against an encampment ban that would protect schools? Also, should a medical center’s owner be pressured to reopen the facility? Finally, there was a watery mess on Vermont and Prospect.

💧 Water Crisis Poll! 💧
Residents are limited to watering their landscapes two days per week, before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. What else should the City do to deal with the water crisis? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 26.7% want to mandate drought-resistant landscaping, 20% want to recycle wastewater for irrigation, another 30% want to build a desalination plant at the coast, and 23.3% don’t believe residential water use contributes to the water crisis.

Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:

1. The City Council voted on Friday 10-1 to “ban homeless encampments within 500 feet of schools and daycare centers.” However, because Councilmember Mike Bonin dissented, there will be another hearing on July 27. Opponents to the measure call it a “criminalization of homelessness.” Supporters consider it “a matter of safety for children who must walk by encampments on their way to classes.” (Patch)
2. The pressure to reopen Westlake’s vacant St. Vincent Medical Center is mounting. Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell wants to see the 400-bed facility reopened “as an acute care facility for people experiencing homelessness.” However, we learned on Friday that the venue’s multi-billionaire owner has yet to commit to meaningful talks with the City Council on the issue. 3. A broken fire hydrant made a mess of Friday’s afternoon rush hour “near Prospect and Vermont avenues.” Onlookers were treated to a huge geyser spraying water around 100 feet into the air. The intersection was flooded. A vehicle crash appears to have been the cause. (ABC)
4. Do you need the monkeypox vaccine? As of Friday, you may receive it if you are among those who “who have had confirmed contact with an existing case or who attended an event where there was a high risk of exposure.” So far, some 800 doses have been given in L.A. County. (NBC)
5. We’re number two! Late last month, 100 cities were compared to determine which were the best to celebrate Independence Day. It turns out that Los Angeles ranked second, with San Francisco being first. Metrics included the costs of alcohol, the weather, and the “duration of fireworks shows.” On the other end of the spectrum, in place 100, is San Bernardino. (WalletHub)
