📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
1) Wednesday night, burglars broke into shops at the Runway Playa Vista shopping center. The affected businesses include “Hopdoddy Burger Bar, SOL Mexican Cocina, and N’ice Cream.” “It’s pretty disgusting because we are a small business, you know. We’re not one of those big chains,” N’ice Cream’s manager said. The suspects wore face masks and hoodies; however, video footage might help someone recognize them. (KTLA)
2) Another day, another false alarm of a school shooting. On Friday morning, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) received calls that there was a shooting at Hollywood High School, at 1521 North Highland Avenue. "There is no evidence of a shooting," an officer said later. You may remember that we just recently talked about a false alarm at University High School. (Patch)
3) Earlier, we reported on the overnight closures of connectors involving the I-10, I-5, and State Route 60. However, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced on Friday that its overnight closure was “reduced to northbound I-5 & westbound State Route 60 connectors to westbound I-10 closed 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.” The Saturday closure is postponed because of anticipated rainfall. (Caltrans District 7)
4) Despite efforts to clear homeless encampments ahead of Karen Bass’ inauguration, we learned on Friday that there are still “a few tents just steps away from City Hall.” People who cooperated with outreach workers were “loaded into vans and moved to the L.A. Grand Hotel, a federally-funded temporary homeless facility on Figueroa Street.” That said, Sunday’s event was moved away from City Hall to the Microsoft Theater because of the possibility of rain. (ABC)
5) When she bought her home in 1999, retired U.S. figure skater Michelle Kwan paid $725,007. We learned on Friday that Kwan has listed the Bel Air property for $2.899 million. “The three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom home features views of the Getty Museum and an expansive backyard that’s built into the hillside and boasts an outdoor kitchen and wood-burning fireplace.” (Mansion Global)
