California Fast Food Workers Poised To Win Major Salary Increases

Most of California's 500,000 fast food workers could be paid at least $20 per hour next year under a new bill aimed at ending a standoff between the industry and labor unions over wages and working conditions.

"I'm happy because this job is stressful," said El Pollo Loco employee Marta Armenta.

In California, most fast food workers are over 18 and the main providers for their families, according to Enrique Lopezlira, director of the University of California-Berkeley Labor Center's Low Wage Work Program. Just over 75% of healthcare workers in California are women, and 76% are workers of color, according to a study published earlier this year by the UC Berkeley Labor Center.
