(As of today, 74.5% don’t want fireworks, 18.2% want “safe and sane fireworks,” 5.5% want to choose what to buy, and another 1.8% don’t care one way or the other.)
Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
- On Monday evening, a CHP officer was shot and wounded while conducting a traffic stop in Studio City. A search ensued, and a 33-year-old suspect was located in a Van Nuys apartment complex later that evening. When police entering the apartment, the suspect had fled. A K-9 unit entered the search and found him “in a nearby homeless encampment” Tuesday. (KTLA)
- We learned on Monday that two suspects are in custody for the December murder of Rapper Slim 400. A 33-year-old is charged “with murder and being a felon in possession” while a 42-year-old faces “an accessory charge.” (NBC)
- Tuesday morning saw the beginning of a bribery trial involving a real estate developer's dealing with former Councilman José Huizar. The defendant allegedly paid the councilman “$500,000 in cash in 2017 in exchange for Huizar's help to resolve problems with the labor union.” (Huizar is scheduled to go on trial in February.) (Patch)
- Beginning Thursday, you have the opportunity to visit the Powamekka Café at L.A. Live. Put on by the estate of Tupac Shakur, it will serve meals until June 30. It creates a setting that allows guests to “play and parlay.” On the menu are “comfort food favorites like gumbo, fried chicken wings and meatloaf.” (LA Eater)
- Mark your calendars! Los Angeles will hold its 37th Annual Kingdom Day Parade on June 20. You may remember that the January celebration had to be postponed due to COVID-19. The event begins at 10 a.m. and starts “on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Western Avenue and will proceed west to Crenshaw Blvd. and then South thereupon to Vernon Ave.” Congresswoman Karen Bass serves as this year’s Grand Marshal.
