🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 48.1% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 25.9% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 3.7% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 22.9% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
1) The Los Angeles Police Department plans to allocate $250,000 to a program addressing ghost guns. Officials announced Thursday that they partnered with “LA Crime Stoppers, to offer a $500 reward for tips leading to the recovery of evidence of ghost gun manufacturing and trafficking activity.” To be eligible for the reward, it's not necessary for an arrest to be made “if evidence is recovered and a manufacturing location is shut down.” Drop a dime to 1-800-222 TIPS. (Patch)
2) Did you see the downed power poles on Thursday in the Pico Union area? Multiple power poles broke on South Vermont Avenue, “between West Washington Boulevard and West Pico Boulevard, just before 11 a.m.” We don’t know what broke them, but we did learn that the poles broke near the bases. (KTLA)
3) There’s construction on I-10 that affects your commute this weekend! Starting Friday at 9 p.m., there will be intermittent closures of “the southbound I-5 & westbound State Route 60 connectors to westbound I-10.” Caltrans will conduct bridge repairs during that time. (Caltrans District 7)
4) On Thursday, the city’s Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department introduced its new discrimination enforcement division. Its goal is to enable the city to enforce civil rights. The department “announced its authority to investigate alleged discriminatory practices in the private sector areas of commerce, education, employment and housing and enforce the city’s Civil and Human Rights Law.” (L.A. Sentinel)
5) Wakanda Forever has inspired a local mural artist. We learned on Wednesday that you can see the finished work on the “corner of Whittier and McBride.” "It's very important that we represent Black and Brown communities together as a unit, and so having images of people of color together in a community where normally they wouldn't be was a very important inspiration in the process," said the artist, Lilia Ramirez. The movie opens next week on Friday. (ABC)
