Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:
- Has the cost of gasoline got you down? Do you keep missing out on the KFI gas card giveaway? On Wednesday, the Arco gas station at the intersection of Crenshaw and West Century boulevards has been selling gasoline at $4.99 for a gallon of regular unleaded. That’s 80 cents less than the average cost of gas in L.A.! The low prices are “to help the community during tough financial times” the overnight manager explained. (KTLA)
- The L.A. Board of Education voted on Tuesday to lengthen next school year by four days. It is a “move to bolster academic recovery efforts.” These days will likely be added at the “10-week semester mark and before final grades are due.” However, regular classes at that time will be canceled. The longer school year runs from August 15, 2022, through June 15, 2023. (L.A. Times)
- Officials envision turning the property bordering Cypress and Glassell parks into “a crown jewel of riverfront revitalization.” However, it consists of 42 acres of contaminated soil, and the project comes with a $1 billion price tag. This is on top of the $60 million the City paid in 2017 for the plot of land. Moreover, the cost went from a projected $252 million to $1.06 billion as of Wednesday. The report comes with a recommendation for the City Council to approve the expenditure. (The Eastsider L.A.)
- We learned on Tuesday that Betty White’s 1952 Brentwood home with its view of the Getty Museum is on the market for $10.575 million. However, you can’t see what the home looks like on the inside. There are no photos. “The property is being sold for land value,” the listing states. (Hollywood Reporter)
- Mark your calendars! Eeeeeatscon is coming to the Baker Hangar in Santa Monica on May 21 and 22. As the name implies, it’s a festival of food, food, and more food. “Eeeeeatscon is designed for people who want more from a food festival rather than just tasting-sized portions and cooking demonstrations.” Twenty restaurants have already signed up to participate. Tickets are on sale and don’t include food and beverage. (Eeeeeatscon)
