📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles. Scofflaws may be fined $500, $1,000, or more. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 74.4% don’t want fireworks, 16.3% want “safe and sane fireworks,” 7% want to choose what to buy, and another 2.3% don’t care one way or the other.)

Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:

  1. At 5:20 a.m. on Friday, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department began an investigation into a fatal stabbing. A Hispanic man in his 30s died close to Somerset Boulevard and San Jose Avenue, near the L.A. River. It is interesting to note that the officers initially arrived at “Somerset Boulevard on the bridge over the LA River” because of a reported traffic accident. If you have any information, please call (323) 890-5500. (LASD)
  2. The strip of land “along the north side of Slauson Avenue between Budlong and Normandie avenues” may only be 81 feet wide, but the City has a vision for building a Slauson Connect Recreation Center. The venue would feature low buildings, park features, playground, and more. We larned on Friday that Paul Murdoch Architects is designing the project using “prefabricated steel modules.” (The Real Deal)
  3. Britney Spears and Sam Asghari got married on Thursday in their Thousand Oaks residence. Officially dating since 2017 and engaged since 2021, the wedding guest list read like a who’s who. There were “Madonna, Selena Gomez, Drew Barrymore, Paris Hilton and Carter Reum, Kathy Hilton, Maria Menounos, Ansel Elgort, will.i.am, her manager Cade Hudson and Donatella Versace.” Not on the guest list, and escorted off the premises by law enforcement, was Jason Alexander, Spears’ ex-husband. He “was arrested and charged with trespassing and battery.” (Vogue, CNN)
  4. The City's serious about the purchase of the Hillside Villa apartment complex in Chinatown. We learned on Friday that the City Council voted for making an offer “of up to $45.695 million” to the building’s current owner, after a three-decade affordable housing agreement expired. A tenant who initially paid $1,430 for a two-bedroom saw his rent go up to $2,666. However, with the building being worth “more than $90 million,” the owner may not agree. (Spectrum News 1)
  5. Mark your calendars! The Rancho Cordillera Del Norte will host an authentic Brazilian Festa Junina on June 19. There will be “arts and crafts, classic outdoor games and Quadrilha, a fun traditional folk dance for the whole family.” Food and music underscore the theme. (Event Brite)
