📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles. Scofflaws may be fined $500, $1,000, or more. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 72.2% don’t want fireworks, 20% want “safe and sane fireworks,” 4% want to choose what to buy, and another 4% don’t care one way or the other.)

Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. A 35-year-old man stabbed two nurses and a doctor at the Encino Hospital Medical Center on Friday. Claiming to be a patient, he caused a four-hour standoff with authorities. “He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and booked on three counts.” It is interesting to note that the suspect has had “previous run-ins with police and has been arrested twice in the past for assaulting police officers.” (NBC)
  2. Construction is coming back to the City. We learned on Saturday that this March, “the city of Los Angeles issued the greatest number of building permits— 16,157 — since November 2019.” However, insiders believe that this number could go even higher if it were not for “labor shortages, inflation and sluggish supply chains.” (Patch)
  3. What are the weekly COVID case numbers? We learned Friday that the County topped “4,300 for the first time in several months.” There were “11 new school outbreaks this week.” Besides that, case rates in the lowest income areas are “at a high level of concern.” (Larchmont Buzz)
  4. The LADWP entered phase 3 of its watering restrictions. The agency explained on Friday that this not only means two watering days per week, but also has more intricate rules. For example, you can water with sprinklers for eight minutes per station unless you use water-conserving nozzles, in which case you can water “for 15 minutes per station, twice per watering day.” The same goes for drip irrigation. “Hand watering is allowed any day before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. if the hose is equipped with a self-closing water shut-off device,” without a time limit as long as there is no runoff. (Granada Hills South Neighborhood Council)
  5. We’re getting more emergency call boxes on L.A. freeways. “LA Metro’s board, acting as the related LA SAFE (Service Authority for Emergency) committee, voted last month to add $1.7 million to a contract for maintaining the call boxes through May 2024, bringing the total amount awarded to contractor CASE Systems, Inc. to $9.9 million,” we learned on Friday. In 2021, there were 5,500 calls made from the currently available 1,057 call boxes. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is a critic of the system and says it’s too expensive. Even so, he voted with the majority of the Metro Board to extend the contract. (Daily News/paywall)
